I've been an LL fan since I saw her first stand up, but I have to say, I agree 100% with another reviewer; she is needy and obnoxious and this was difficult to read. Because I love her, I gave it a try, I made it through the whole book, and...it didn't get any less obnoxious. Black this, black that...she has no other "go-to", nothing else of any whit or humor. "I get banged by chubby white guys or buff black guys"...that's all there is. It is the exact same thing that you can get for free by listening to old Howard Stern interviews or her standup. Disappointing.

Chocolate Please My Adventures in Food Fat and Freaks Lisa Lampanelli 9780061733154 Books Reviews

After seeing Lisa Lampanelli's show in Syracuse, NY on September 12, 2009, 3 days before Chocolate, Please My Adventures in Food, Fat and Freaks came out, I couldn't wait to get her book. The book, an autobiography is hilariously funny and I have to give it to Lisa for her guts to write it. Now I know Lisa Lampanelli is a shameless self-promoter in the style of P.T. Barnum, but this book is totally scandalous! I loved it and could not put it down! Say what you may about Lisa and her raunchy material as an insult comic, but she really writes from the heart! There is no B.S. here....what you see, is what you get, and that is why I'm a big fan of Lisa Lampanelli. (I even bought a $20 shirt at her concert...she'll sell anything for a buck...but it's all good) If you want to read about someone with fat issues, black men issues, rehab issues, and want to laugh your ass off, then pick up this book. I already gave it to my co-worker to read who went with me to her concert. She called me and told me the book was so funny she couldn't stop laughing. I agree the book is as scandalous as Lisa Lampanelli!
If you are a fan of Lisa Lampanelli, do yourself a huge favor and waste no time in getting and reading this wonderful book. A real page-turner. She is the funniest person on the planet. Her story is fascinating and by no means all laughs. She writes well, and is honest about her struggles and sadness. I have never cracked up harder. Crude, gross, outrageously politically incorrect, and an absolute ball. Loads of riotous zingers. It's amazing how her insults are so crude and in-your-face but not mean-spirited. She's very lovable and down-to-earth. People like Lisa who make us laugh are worth their weight in gold!
Thank you and God bless you, Lisa!
I love Lisa! Let me start there. I think she's absolutely brilliant. I'd seen her live act 3 times and remember her mentioning that she had a book due out, and then never heard of it after that. I only discovered that it had been published last year recently. I wondered why so little pub in the mainstream media? So I ordered it and read it and was underwhelmed...not by the writing itself, but from the book's organization which...shame on the publisher...was ridiculously slipshod. The book ends at page 229, but isn't over until almost 60 pages later.

If you read it, you know what I mean. Those last 60 pages are filled with Lisa-type observations, observations that should have been sprinkled throughout the book itself. It really would hsve helped with the pacing, would have fit in much better. It feels like those pages were simply tacked on.

There is a lot of terrific material here; funny, insightful, revealing. But this could and should have been a book that was a classic.
A good book for her fans, should have been a great book for everybody.
I couldn't even get through half of this book. The Lovable Queen Of Mean is so annoying and obnoxious that I found myself skipping entire passages while I was reading. Usually I'm a pick up the book and read it until I'm finished person... but this time? No. I read some, went to another book, read some more of it, went to another book... finally I just decided to scrap it and be done with it. I didn't find Lisa Lampanelli funny as much as I found her rude and off-putting. Her overuse of the word "retard" was enough to turn me off but when I got to her nastiness about the deaf I realized I was through. Ugly, racist, nasty "humor" might work for some people but not for me. I don't care if she insults everybody, as she proudly says, it's still not funny. Unless you are already a fan of her work, don't even bother with this book because it probably won't turn you into one.
I love Lisa's comedy, so I was excited to read her book. I was so glad to read about her commitment to her healthier lifestyle by GETTING HELP -- it seems so rare these days! Not that I have any problem with her weight/appearance, but she had some genuine issues with food and I'm glad that she is addressing them.

I thought it was odd that she chose the title 'Chocolate, Please' since she dispels a lot of the myths (self-perpetuated in her act) that she has dated/does date a lot of black men. In fact, the truth of it is that there weren't many and she was essentially using them all to feel better about herself -- which is a bit hurtful, and she acknowledges this, so it's odd that the publishers wanted her to name her book about it.

I loved the inside stories about the various roasts that she's been a part of. It's too bad so many were private events and not available to the public. I love a good roast, and she's one of the best. She knows how to walk the fine line of "rude" and "cruel" so that she can border on a good butt-hurt joke without making someone cry. It's a delicate skill that she has perfected and I would love to see more of it! I would honestly LOVE to see a great big book of 'behind the scenes at the roast' stories with Lisa and some of the others.

She also is very sincerely appreciative of the radio 'shock jocks' who gave her a chance and boosted her career. Her writing about Howard Stern is very sweet -- even if it's hard to think of him that way. It just adds to the overall impression that Lisa is a very sweet person and that you'd like her a lot in real life. After hearing several interviews with her, she's not much like her on-stage act and this book gives you a small glimpse into who she really is.
